High Court Grants Nnamdi Kanu’s Request For Treatment By His Own Medical Doctors - We Hope The DSS Complies

In a recent development, the Federal High Court in Abuja has granted Nnamdi Kanu the right to be checked on and treated by a medical doctor of his choice.

This judgment came on Thursday, 20th, 2023, many months after Ndi Igbo continuously asked for his release – many months after he had been discharged and acquitted by the same courts.

It is rather unfortunate that the Nigerian government, through its DSS, has continued to hold Nnamdi Kanu in detention, despite his life-threatening health challenges and being a free man.

In her judgment, which seems to not have held water as a result of the disregard of the Nigerian law and constitution by the DSS, Justice Binta Nyako said that Nnamdi Kanu is entitled to a medical doctor of his choosing. She however insisted that the applicant, Nnamdi Kanu, would have to bear the expenses of his diagnosis and treatment.

In as much as Nnamdi Kanu’s followers, his lovers, IPOB, his family, and well-wishers are celebrating this judgment, we must categorically state that his continuous detention is a miscarriage of justice. We also hope that the DSS would obey the judgment of the courts since they have made it a duty to flout every victory or judgment in favor of Nnamdi Kanu. It is one thing for Ndi Igbo to rejoice, but then it is another thing for Nnamdi Kanu to get the much-needed medical attention he deserves.

According to reports on the judgment, Nnamdi Kanu applied for an order of mandamus through his legal team ably led by Prof. Mike Ozekhome, SAN. The order was to compel the security agency, the DSS, to grant him unrestricted access to his private doctors.

The judgment also mandated that any medical examination carried out on Nnamdi Kanu by the DSS outside the detention facility, must be done under the supervision of Nnamdi Kanu’s team of medical doctors and that the reports should be sealed for security purposes.

While Ndi Igbo, IPOB, and all lovers of freedom rejoice over this, we must make it abundantly clear that Nnamdi Kanu’s medical checkup and treatment have been long overdue, and it is essential for the DSS to comply with this judgment given by Justice Binta Nyako.

The other observation which we have raised at Voice Of The Sun is part of the judgment that seeks to hide/seal the results of Nnamdi Kanu’s treatment. We feel making his diagnosis and treatment public knowledge would be in his best interest and that of his people.

May it be well with Nnamdi Kanu.
