Meet Igbo Researcher Who Is Travelling And Identifying Igbo People Scattered All Over Southern Nigeria Through The ‘Unify Igbos Now Project’
Unify Igbos Now Project: Ndi Igbo are a great people with a noble and unique heritage and are scattered all over the Southern part of Nigeria, with a population of about 50 million. While many Ndi Igbo of today, and Nigerians in general, believe that the Igbo inhabit only the five (5) core Eastern states of Nigeria, the truth is that there are a large number of Igbo towns and villages in other Nigerian states such as Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Kogi, Edo, Benue, Delta, Cross River, and Bayelsa.
The ‘Unify Igbos Now Project’ by Chukwuemeka, of NNAA MEHN TV, is a timely project that seeks to identify the lost and hidden Igbo towns in other parts of Igbo land and unite them back to the bigger Igbo family.
His project and research have been very sensitive because many states in the Southern part of Nigeria that have Igbo indigenes are doing their possible best to deny the Igbo among them. In some other cases, the Igbo-speaking towns themselves deny being Igbo. Something had to be done, to expose the lies, and show that the Igbo are scattered all over other states in the South and middle belt. And Ndi Ichie has raised Chukwuemeka, of NNAA MEHN TV, to embark on the ‘Unify Igbos Now Project’.
In a Voice Of The Sun interview with our brother Chukwuemeka as to why he started the ‘Unify Igbos Now Project’, he took us down memory lane to the events that fueled his passion to discover Ndi Igbo wherever they were in Nigeria. He recounted:
“In the year 2002, I was sent to my uncle’s house from Aba to live with and attend secondary school. In my class, I tried to make friends with those who bear a familiar name as an Igbotic Aba boy so that I can be communicating with them in the language I am conversant with. But I met resentments, especially from the IKWERE folks back then.
So, I grew more curious to know why Ifeanyi who sometimes speaks and understands the Igbo language will tell me that he is not Igbo and had nothing to do with the Igbo. Even Chidinma from Emuohua.
I found it difficult to blend in throughout my 2 years in the school. I felt the school with so many unanswered questions. Fast forward to the year 2022, I found a voice using social media, now it’s time to ask that question… Why are Ikwere, Etche, Omuma, and the rest of them, not IGBOS?”
I am hungry for answers!
That was what later gave birth to the #UnifyIgbosNow project…
The experience of our brother Chukwuemeka is one we know too well among our Igbo brothers and sisters from other states in the South. They are very bold in denying their Igbo heritage, even though they bear Igbo names, have Igbo markets, and practice the same cultures and traditions as other Igbo towns and regions.
